What is Wilderness International doing at the environmental policy level to advance wilderness conservation?
The primary goal of Wilderness International is the direct protection of wilderness areas. Environmental policy measures often take place in very lengthy, resource-intensive processes, and their success is often not long-lasting. This is why we focus on practical environmental protection and directly preserve ecologically valuable habitats. In addition to purchasing wilderness areas, we collaborate with First Nations. We support local peoples in drawing attention to environmental issues and raising them to a global level. For example, we, along with the Gwich’in First Nation, successfully advocated for the protection of the Peel River Watershed, a wilderness area the size of Austria in northern Canada.
