Does the carbon footprint sum up all my impacts on the earth?
But our CO2 emissions express only a fraction of the impact our activities have on the planet. It is not only when we take the bus or fly by plane that we leave our mark on the earth. Oil production, refining and transport, for example, consume natural resources and destroy natural areas. For the construction of infrastructure such as roads, the extraction of resources for the production of machinery and the construction of factories, for example, many valuable ecosystems worldwide are polluted or destroyed. As a result, the basis of life for a huge diversity of species and also for ourselves is disappearing.
This so-called ecological footprint has so far been difficult to make fully tangible. At present, we can only express a fraction in simplified figures, the CO2 footprint.
It is therefore all the more important to find holistic solutions that do not focus exclusively on avoiding or reabsorbing CO2, but rather preserve biodiversity and keep the climate stable.
