How accurate is the calculation of my footprint?
Wherever possible, we include the entire life cycle of a product or activity in the CO2 calculation (e.g. not only gasoline combustion of the car, but also emissions from raw material extraction, production and disposal of the vehicle).
We use relatively few averages and generalizations in our calculator. Our primary goal in developing the calculator, and creating our database, has always been that everyone can calculate their personal footprint as accurately as possible. In this way, for example, people who hardly ever drive are not held responsible for emissions from infrastructure such as highways, which in many common calculators are added to each footprint as a lump sum. Therefore, the calculations sometimes may take a little longer or require more detailed effort to determine your specific values. However, at many points, you also have options for how precisely you would like to provide the data.
As high as our standards are, the availability of data does not always allow us to provide specific values. And sometimes, the query would simply be too complicated and tedious for you, and you'd end up frustrated or abandon it altogether, as it's very complex to represent the richness of various CO2 factors. In these cases, we also use average values and sometimes estimates, which have been carefully collected from a variety of sources, compared, and selected according to numerous quality criteria.
