What does "legally compliant" mean at Wilderness International?
We protect land exclusively through purchase with land registry entry and in countries with a high level of legal certainty (i.e., good laws and political institutions). The land is purchased by our three sister foundations in Germany, Canada, and Peru. This means that Wilderness International has sole rights of disposal. Our statutes stipulate that the land must remain untouched and may only be visited for research and documentation purposes. It cannot be resold. The foundation concept prevents the rights of disposal of property from being held by a single person. Rather, the foundation and thus also its land always belong to all the people involved in the foundation at the time. Those who donate to us are not buying the forest; rather, the donations refinance the purchase and enable us to protect the forest areas in the long term. We always pay in advance and only collect donations once the area already belongs to us.
