What is WI doing at the environmental policy level to promote wilderness conservation?
The primary goal of Wilderness International is the concrete protection of wilderness areas. Environmental policy measures often require very lengthy, resource-intensive processes to achieve, and experience shows that their success is often not lasting. That is why we engage in practical environmental protection, thereby directly preserving ecologically valuable habitats.
In addition to purchasing wilderness areas, we work together with the local population. We support local stakeholders in drawing attention to environmental problems and raising them to a global level. This enabled us to secure the protection of the Peel River Watershed, a wilderness area the size of Austria in northern Canada. You can find more information about the project here.
However, our concrete, active actions are political in the sense that we do not rely on proxy politics or wait for change to come from above, but take action ourselves. Given the urgency of the situation, we want to use our resources wisely. We promote environmental change by bringing about positive change at the local community level. In this respect, we understand political engagement as a continuous, everyday action that is rooted in people's hearts and reflected in their actions.
