What does WI Peru do?
Our sister foundation, Wilderness International Peru, has been actively committed to protecting the tropical Amazon rainforest since its founding in 2019. We are currently primarily active in the Madre de Dios region, where our protected areas are located along the Tambopata River. You can see the exact locations here. For more information about our protected area, the "Secret Forest," click here.
Chris Kirkby, president of Wilderness International Peru, coordinates the search, exploration, and purchase of new protected areas on site. WI Peru is also active in environmental education. As part of the WI Peru Educa , the team aims to provide people living in the vicinity of our protected areas with even more knowledge and arguments as to why it is important to take action now to protect the rainforest and its inhabitants. Another key project on the ground is the agroforestry project , which aims to protect local ecosystems in a sustainable manner, minimize the causes of deforestation, and work with families to develop alternative sources of income. You can find out more about our local projects here.
The forest rangers at WI Peru are responsible for regularly monitoring and protecting our forest areas on site. They patrol our protected areas every day and are supported in their work by wildlife cameras, drones, and audio sensors. WI Peru also works closely with our partner organization Fauna Forever in researching biodiversity in our areas.
The headquarters of Wilderness International Peru is in Puerto Maldonado. You can find out more about WI Peru here.
