What does WI Canada do?
Since its founding in 2008, our sister foundation Wilderness International Canada has been actively involved in protecting the temperate rainforest on the west coast of British Columbia, as well as in environmental education and projects with local First Nations. This is because British Columbia, home to the the last large contiguous area of temperate rainforest, is one of the last jurisdictions in the world that continues to allow large-scale logging of 600 to 1,800-year-old giant old-growth trees . The team is therefore involved in the search, evaluation, and purchase of new protected areas, as well as partnerships and new projects. Here you can learn more about the "Misty Forest" in Canada, and here you can see the exact locations of the protected areas. For more information on temperate rainforests, click here.
A successful joint project with the First Nations was a wilderness run in Cowichan Valley. WI Canada was also involved in the "Protect the Peel" project in collaboration with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and the Gwich'in. More information can be found in the trailer "Save the Peel Watershed Wilderness". You can find out more about our local projects here.
Wilderness International Canada is headquartered in Stony Plain, near Edmonton. For more information about WI Canada, please visit here.
